Christmas: The season of giving and generosity

With over 70% of people planning to donate to charity this time of year (thank you, Fundraising.co.uk), it’s the perfect moment for charities to connect with passionate supporters.

But how do you cut through the festive noise? Here are some tips for engagement:

  • Keep your message simple and impactful – what do you want donors to do, and why?

  • Simplify the donation process – don’t let data collection scare people away. It’s tempting to use the donation point of contact to glean as much data as possible, but when people are time poor this can be a huge barrier that ultimately drives donors away.

  • Show donors the difference they are making – offer an instant reward to make your CTA stand out. This could be a real life example of how their money is going to be spent, a picture or video showing the charity in action, a thank you message or an invitation to follow your important work and see their money being well spent. This type of appreciation for your donors really can go a long way.

  • Use seasonal fundraising initiatives, such as the Big Give, as a platform to amplify your message to new supporters. The Aplastic Anaemia Trust’s Big Give campaign went live yesterday. Last year it increased their donations by 400% in the first week it launched.

  • Get inspired by all the amazing campaigns running over the next few weeks. What are your favourite charities doing - what works, what doesn’t?

We’re thrilled to share our campaign with The Aplastic Anaemia Trust.

We talked to Barbara, (pictured), about how she felt when she was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder she’d never even heard of. This campaign has been all about shining a light on what it’s like being diagnosed in adulthood as usually the focus is on children with Aplastic Anaemia. Barbara tells her story with so much honesty and reflectiveness, it really makes clear how important great storytelling is to communicating the important work charities like The Aplastic Anaemia Trust are doing on a daily basis.
